Heart Insurance Policy – A Short Story

While preparing a sales report, Arun suddenly felt a small sensation in his chest. It felt as though someone was pressing him on the chest. He waited for it to pass and blamed it on the lunchtime pav bhaji. It usually played in his bowel movements. He hurried for the prints and went immediately to put them back in the file folders. Arun’s boss always wanted him to be a shining example as the best employee.

Arun hurriedly reached the meeting room and started setting up his laptop. He distributed the folders to everyone present. As soon as he switched on his laptop, he had a small uneasy feeling building up in his chest and knew that something was amiss. He opened the presentation on his screen and saw the glaring error. Arun had incorrectly used the previous quarter numbers. He fumbled on his laptop and accidentally switched in on hibernate. Sweat started flowing down his brow and he started worrying about the temperature in the room.

He looked at his boss, who was busy chatting with the Director, Mr. Goyal. The next thing, as he opened his eyes, he saw his boss sprinkling water on his face. Everyone was standing on top of him looking with concerned eyes. He slowly got up and realised he had fainted. Mr. Goyal and Arun’s boss took him to a separate room and asked him if everything was okay. He said that he still was having some chest pain.

Mr. Goyal appeared concerned and asked Arun to immediately go home and get some medical attention and said that this level of stress was not good for him. A chest pain can be for various reasons. It can be due to an upset stomach, gas or it can be due to the heart working very hard to pump blood through the veins.

What Arun found out was that the chest pain he encountered was because of tiny blockages in the heart vessels which minutely put pressure as they pass through the heart. This condition should not be taken lightly.

Dr. Avinash told him that the heart acts like an engine for the body. And the engine needs good fuel and maintenance to run. Good fuel for the heart is regular exercise along with a good diet and maintenance and less stress. Habit formation is the key to having lower levels of stress and helps us maintain peace in life. In this hectic world, a simple thing like playing with your children, having small talk with close family members can have a huge impact on the stress levels. Little things in life, like having a laugh, having a hobby or just unplugging mobile/TV can be useful stress busters.

Failing to maintain stress is an invitation for trouble. Work never stops, it always piles up. Even a successful entrepreneur says that work-life balance is important. Maintaining a balance, in this case, is the key.

The doctor told him that as of now his condition looked okay and advised him to come back to the clinic a few days later. Later, when Arun reached the clinic, he was feeling much better. The doctor enquired about his near and dear ones and found out that Arun was the sole breadwinner in a family of 5. Avinash told Arun, that he was lucky. Reports are borderline as of now, and this entire procedure is called Bypass surgery and would cost somewhere around Rs. 7.5 Lacs.

Avinash told him that by God’s grace he was in the safe zone and wouldn’t need the procedure. But he should be very careful with his health. Then he asked Arun about his financial status and asked him whether he would like to go for pre-emptive treatment. Arun was skeptical as he didn’t have the required funds. Avinash was shocked that Arun didn’t have the required heart insurance policy. Arun told him that he always thought health insurance was for people who were already sick. Avinash clarified that medical costs are getting very expensive these days and ideally every one of them should have one health insurance apart from the mediclaim provided by the company.

Now Arun was puzzled, as he never thought of getting another cover apart from his official mediclaim policy. Avinash explained to him that with this kind of health issues, one has to be careful and prepare for a backup. Even an absence of a small salary followed by a medical issue can lead to a downward spiral in personal finances. Arun asked him which insurance would be the best for him. To which the doctor replied that this depends on his pre-existing conditions and the current health profile.

Given Arun’s circumstances, he should be investing for his family’s wellbeing and get into a plan specifically designed for health/cardiac problems. Some of the examples are:

Without which there is no point risking our skills or life. We can only be assured of life without stress by covering our bigger risks like health, life & expenses.
